The most unlikely basket of the opening month of the college basketball season wasn't even intended to be a shot at all.
In a 94-93 overtime victory over winless Austin Peay last Wednesday, Detroit point guard Ray McCallum Jr. curled around a screen, caught a pass from a teammate and lost control of the ball driving to the rim. When McCallum slapped at the ball to get it back, it bounced high off the floor, off the backboard and through the rim, an improbable basket better suited for H-O-R-S-E than a closely contested nonconference game.
Not only did McCallum crack a smile as he ran back up floor, several of the Austin Peay players also shook their head in disbelief. They would probably have been even more upset had they known they would go on to lose the game in overtime by a single point.
The play might have gone unnoticed nationally had Detroit not released video of the shot on Monday afternoon. In the play-by-play that accompanies the box score to Wednesday's game, McCallum's circus shot merely reads, "McCallum made Jumper."
